108000 mi US $521 |
Replaced right front wheel bearing |
Manual transmission would not shift into gear and when forced it would grind very badly. A car should not have a transmission failure at 651 miles, so I exchanged it for an identical vehicle. |
100022 mi US $1700 |
Clutch slipping in all gears. Difficulty in putting transmission into gear. Replaced clutch pressure plate, clutch disc, flywheel and clutch slave cylinder. |

138-horsepower 1.8L I4 5-speed manual FWD
40300 mi C $5000 |
2nd gear went out completely. Car was never driven hard but with only 64000kms on it it started to refuse to stay in 2nd then finally locked itself into second. Transmission , clutch kit and flywheel surfacing was expensive due to the rarity of the car parts. Astra was Opel and only 2 years here in Canada. As well the linkage bracket broke and the coil pack let go. At that point i was into the car for 6 grand , which was more then resale value. Traded the car in for a 2017 civic ext coupe. |
30000 mi | Manual transmission shifter reverse engage trigger replaced. |
53320 mi C $4000 |
Clutch completely failed out of the blue one day, and lost power. Clutch was replaced, as well as a leaky hose. Front brakes were also replaced at the same time. |
13000 mi | Transmission pan seal leaking. |
59000 mi US $3100 |
Manual gearbox lost gears while driving. Shifter was locked and would not go into any gears. Diagnosed as a failed bearing inside the transmission, which damaged the gears beyond repair. Shop replaced the transmission with another low mileage unit and replaced clutch, slave cylinder, etc. at the same time. |
138-horsepower 1.8L I4 4-speed automatic FWD
43000 mi | Transmission burned up. Replaced Transmission. Transmission has loss of power. Dealer reprogramed the TCM (transmission control modual) and ECM (engine control module). Transmission has metal to metal engage and disengage sound in third gear. |
53000 mi | Continuing transmission problems when sold |
83000 mi US $233 |
Boot on right inside CV joint failed. Had to buy the entire axle from GM and it did not come with an outside CV joint. Had to transfer the old one over. Would expect more for $233US. If you can find a shop that replaces rubber boots go that route and just have the boot replaced and repack with grease. Easier than transferring over the outer CV joint. |
