TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Audi A4 / S4 / RS4

Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 Real Gas Mileage: Pros
YearComment
2017 Everyone has been switching to turbo fours in pursuit of fuel economy. Despite being such a quick car, the new A4 manages EPA ratings of 25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway with front-wheel drive and 24/31 with all-wheel drive. If you're willing to trade off some performance for even better numbers, and don't require all-wheel drive, the new 190-horsepower "ultra" achieves 27/37. In my driving the A4's trip computer reported averages as high as 36 mpg in the suburbs and 34 mpg on the highway. Mid-to-high 20s happened without even trying to be economical. Lexus, perhaps because it's new to turbocharging, can't match these figures. The IS 200t scores 22/32, while the IS 300 (with AWD) manages only 19/26, a full five mpg short of the Audi. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review

YearBody/PowertrainComment
2012 4dr Sedan turbocharged 211hp 2.0L I4
6-speed manual AWD
Very surprised! Drive 80 Hwy / 20 City driving. If I watch how I accelerate (cruising speed not so much; I drive 110-125 on hwy). Averaging 6-7.5L/100km. (700+km per 55L tank every fill up). see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2011 4dr Sedan supercharged 333hp 3.0L V6
7-speed automated manual AWD
Despite the supercharger and high performance, this vehicle gives me about 6.8l/100km on the highway on average - amazing fuel efficiency. This is a very welcome bonus. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2010 4dr Sedan turbocharged 211hp 2.0L I4
6-speed manual AWD
Better than expected highway mileage. Averaged 34mpg on a 350-mile trip last weekend, keeping speed to about 60mph. Commuting mileage is acceptable. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2010 4dr Sedan supercharged 333hp 3.0L V6
7-speed automated manual AWD
27mpg at 70mph see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2009 4dr Sedan turbocharged 211hp 2.0L I4
6-speed manual AWD
30mpg is easy to achieve with modest driving, even with the turbo. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2008 4dr Sedan turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed manual AWD
Great fuel economy if driven easily, but is a great performer if pushed. Best of both worlds. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2008 4dr Sedan turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
averaging 24.4 mpg - not bad see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2008 4dr Sedan turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed manual AWD
higher than others with less power see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2008 4dr Wagon turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Good tradeoff of performance and mileage. Previous VW 1.8t owner, viewed this as an upgrade. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2008 4dr Sedan 420-horsepower 4.2L V8
6-speed manual AWD
EPA ratings are accurate. I've seen as low as 12 mpg in the city, and up to 22 mpg on highway journies. I average 15 mpg in mostly-city driving. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2010 4dr Sedan turbocharged 211hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Quattro and turbocharged engine form a thirsty combination. I would have expected 700+ highway kms but typically get only 600. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2010 4dr Sedan supercharged 333hp 3.0L V6
7-speed automated manual AWD
Avg about 18-20 mpg on real world highways. City can be as poor as 12-14. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2008 4dr Sedan turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed manual AWD
The diesel version has MORE torque and power AND has a far better range (about 700 miles for 2L diesel engine), I dislike the 22-24 mpg for the combined driving (mostly city). Those are still good numbers for its class. Sucks when have to pay $3.87/gallon see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2008 2dr Convertible 420-horsepower 4.2L V8
6-speed manual AWD
No 420hp car is going to sip fuel, but the fuel tank is small (14.5 gallons) and thus needs filled too often. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2007 4dr Sedan 255-horsepower 3.1L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
only averaging 17 mpg see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2007 4dr Wagon turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
I guess this is average for a car like this. Keep off the turbo and things improve. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2007 4dr Sedan 255-horsepower 3.1L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Overall fuel economy barely acceptable on premium fuel. Highway fuel economy is fine but city economy stinks. 21 MPG driving 70% highway miles. However, better than Infiniti G35x see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2006 4dr Wagon 255-horsepower 3.1L V6
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
not as good as it should be in my opinion, although in line with the (newer more realistic) EPA figures. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2006 4dr Sedan 255-horsepower 3.1L V6
6-speed manual AWD
Not bad, but not great either see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
2006 4dr Sedan turbocharged 200hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Not as good as advertised. see full Audi A4 / S4 / RS4 review
