Reviewed: 2006 Lincoln Zephyr

4dr Sedan 221-horsepower 3.0L V6 6-speed automatic FWD

Why the 2006 Lincoln Zephyr?

Exterior styling

Very modern and unique styling.

Ride smoothness

Impressive ride for a midsize car on struts. OEM Michelin tires contribute to a soft ride

Quietness

Very well insulated, low tire and wind noise

Powertrain performance

Throttle tip in a bit weak, but transmission makes very firm, crisp shifts. Good gear spacing.

Fuel economy

17.5 to 18 mpg in mostly city city driving. Not bad for a relatively heavy midsize car with a smallish V6. No long trips yet.

Why Not the 2006 Lincoln Zephyr?

Audio & nav systems

THX stereo overrated. Bose system in my Trailblazer blows it away. Wonder how long it will be before LCD screen goes dim. New to Nav systems, but it seems to work well.

Interior styling

Boxy retro interior styling seems at odds with exterior styling.

Front seat support & comfort

Front seat cushions seem too short.

Controls and instruments

Small buttons and placement of HVAC and seat controls in particular, require too much time with eyes off the road to operate.

Driving position & visibility

Fat D pillars and high deck restrict rearward vision. Good front and side vision though.
