Reviewed: 2006 Toyota 4Runner

4dr SUV 236-horsepower 4.0L V6 5-speed automatic 4WD w/low range

Why the 2006 Toyota 4Runner?

Cargo capacity

Bigger cargo capacity on the inside than my previous Jeep Cherokees. With the V6 option towing capacity is 5000 pounds - adequate for my puposes.

Reliability & durability

Excellent reliablility reputation. My girlfriend has a Camry (I think all of those parts must be made in China - just awful). The 4Runner parts are heavier duty and stronger parts. However, at 45,000 miles all four shocks needed to be replaced.

Powertrain performance

The V6 is stronger, more powerful and more fuel efficient than the 4.0L in-line six from my previous Jeeps.

Feature availability

Toyota is comparable to Jeep Grand Cherokee. The SR5 model is not a stripped down unit. Has everything that I was looking for: multi-mode 4WD, body-on-frame, power rack-and-pinion steering rather than ball and trunion.

Brand reputation & image

Long model life, good resale value, strong "truck" chassis platform.
