Toyota Yaris Reliability And Durability: Pros
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2010 4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
Its a Toyota, simple as that. They are built to last. full 2010 Toyota Yaris review
2010 4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
5-speed manual FWD
I am a stickler on maintenance and was very disappointed on the driver side drive shaft seal leaking twice! I was not given any reason why this would happened but so far since the last repair it seems all is fine. I change my own oil and was able to notice the problem way before it was serious as I notice an oozing of manual transmission oil around this drive shaft. I have not been able to find this is a common problem though. full 2010 Toyota Yaris review
2009 2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
5-speed manual FWD
I have not had a single problem with the car in the first seven months of ownership. Put gas in, change the oil and it just goes. full 2009 Toyota Yaris review
2008 4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
I have had 3 Toyotas now and all have been trouble free for over 150,000km. full 2008 Toyota Yaris review
2008 2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4

2008 2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
Have owned this car for almost three years. NO need to go to the shop at all (oil changes and other routine maintenance has been done at home). full 2008 Toyota Yaris review
2008 4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
It has a good reputation. I have known many Toyotas to have well over 250,000 miles on them without so much as minor maintenance and a few small repairs. full 2008 Toyota Yaris review
2008 2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
5-speed manual FWD
Know others who own Toyotas and all are very happy. full 2008 Toyota Yaris review
2007 2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
Many years history of solid red dots on Consumer Reports Reliability Survey. full 2007 Toyota Yaris review
2007 2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4
5-speed manual FWD
Anecdotally, this Yaris is at least as reliable as several other Toyotas that have passed through the family, which is a high standard to begin with. Toyota has made several engineering choices that reduce and simplify maintenance effort:
  • Timing chain (rather than belt) eliminates the need to check and replace it periodically
  • Electric power steering eliminates an additional belt-driven engine accessory, a hydraulic system that can leak, and a fluid reservoir that must be checked
  • Combined brake + clutch fluid reservoir means one less reservoir to check
As with any car, getting the base model helps reliability. Crank windows reduce electrical complexity and an actuator in each door, as do manual locks. Two doors rather than four means half as many doors to have issues with! full 2007 Toyota Yaris review
