Feb 2018115000 miUS $683 | The vehicle came back from a routine service at the dealership and had a severe pull to the right (never noticed prior to service).. Took it back and they ostensibly said that they would restore the wheels/tires to the original positions.. At this time the problem was worse after their service..Pulling to the opposite direction, getting more severe as speed increased, vibration at 55-57 mph similar to imbalance however at about 73 mph the vibration became extreme and dangerous with severe pulling to the right.. Replaced right side drive shaft/CV joints and wheel bearing.. There was no obvious reason for doing this except that the problem seemed to be in the right front.. There was NO failed part that really needed replacement.. Cost of parts approx $285, labor free.. The problem was ultimately resolve by replacing all 4 tires ...2 at a time and then moving the known NEW tires (2 on front) to the rear and determining that there was ALSO a bad tire in the original pair remaining ... In reality, there were 2 BAD tires with ply separations/broken belts, however there was no physical indication noticeable until a close examination AFTER the problem had been eliminated... No wanting to "walk"/undulate from side to side at slow speeds on good pavement as is usually indicative of ply separation/broken belts (in my experience)... Approx cost of 4 new tires total $600 .. While this was a lot of work to do, much of it for nothing, it still beat putting it in the dealership shop and letting them get some education at my expense.. They wanted to start with replacing both drive axles, rotors, brakes, and possibly struts... Sadly, we all too often are familiar with the callous incompetence that has become the hallmark of automotive repair... I am a former NIASE Certified Master Technician ..let it expire after 35 years about 5 years ago ... I'm 79 years old now, didn't think I'd still have to be crawling around under a car to get it repaired properly... This is my wife's vehicle, 4wd, I drive an old 96 Ford Ranger.. It'll last me 'til I die... Thanks, Sam Van Norte |
