Check engine light for air/fuel sensors. Could have replaced sensor but due to a defect in the exhaust manifold this issue would not go away completely. Had to replace exhaust manifold and 2 air/fuel sensors. |
44000 mi | Hose to oil system failed. Lost all oil. Toyota said some Avalons have this issue. yet, no recall or service bulletin. |

Check engine light flashing. Showed 3 cylinders had misfired. Reset codes, replaced gas cap, added Techron fuel cleaner, and started going to Chevron for gas instead of cheapest I can find. This car's at almost 200K so I think I need to baby it a bit with higher quality gas and dropping a bottle of Techron in every 2-3 months. So far no more misfires...fingers crossed. |

25000 mi US $240 |
Exhaust manifold has design flaw but no recall. Air/fuel sensor Bank 1, sensor 1 fails prematurely. Replace mainfold/sensor for $1800 or sensor for $240 every 20,000'ish miles. I chose the latter. Good now for another few years (I hope) |
34200 mi | This is the second time the air-fuel sensor has died. An OEM replacement was used last time and lasted only 1 year. There is a design-flaw in the exhaust manifold. Must be replaced to avoid repeated repairs, but that would cost $1800 :-( UPDATE: May 2017 - 5 years later: No new failures of this part. Perhaps the second replacement done in 2012 will be the last one. Did they fix the sensor design ? (I still haven't replaced the exhaust manifold which was the original Toyota recommendation) |
35000 mi US $15 |
Gas smell in garage on very hot days. Replaced gas cap and seems to have gone away. Finally got around to replacing A/F sensor (for second time - see earlier entries). Replaced it myself with help of a friend (with OEM part like before). We'll see how long it lasts on this second sensor. (First one lasted only 14 months) UPDATE: May 2017 - 5 years later: No new failures of this part. Perhaps the second replacement done in 2012 will be the last one. Did they fix the sensor design ? (I still haven't replaced the exhaust manifold which was the original Toyota recommendation) |
