Front struts were identified as leaking by dealership technician. Quoted $1100 to R&R struts, which I felt was excessive. I consulted an independent shop where a friend works and they came in $200 lower in cost using Monroe preassembled spring/strut units.
93000 mi Monroe units were deemed to be faulty (knocking/pinging noise) & were replaced under warranty. New sets are noisy under steering input. Problem not resolved.
96000 mi First set of Monroe Quick-Strut units had been replaced with another set, which made terrible noise under steering input. Diagnosed the problem as strut mount bearings, so the shop ordered Motorcraft replacements and installed those with the Monroe struts and springs underneath. This cured all of the issues. We don't know why the Monroe mounts didn't want to rotate when installed, because when they were on the bench, they rotated just fine.
