Whining noise was diagnosed as transfer case bearing that cannot be replaced. Since TC is part of the transmission (4MOTION model) a re-manufactured transmission was installed. While this happens in the all-wheel-drive c300s, I consider it just an unlucky occurrence that I have one that failed. It is still a beautiful car and now it's pretty much bullet-proof!
