Check engine light - found leaky exhaust. Replaced pipe from catalytic converter back. Check engine light still on
97800 mi Soon after purchase, the check engine light came on (P2178 too rich off idle) with no other pending or trouble codes. The engine runs a bit rough at times with low fuel economy. The garage I purchased the Mazda from replaced the MAF sensor and the Mazda genuine oxygen sensor to no avail and they do not seem to have an idea how to solve it.

The error is too generic and I don't drive enough (~3k miles/yr) to make it my highest priority. So I am just following the troubleshooting guide from https://www.autocodes.com/p2178_mazda.html and replace/cleaning small things I can myself when I want to. Cleaned throttle body and replace spark plugs. I found the #1 plug was covered in oil so the valve gasket replacement is needed. But I won't do it before I replace the PCV valve, which is apparently not an easy job due to its location (underneath the intake manifold). Perhaps I will get to it when it's warmer outside.

Engine light went on again but mechanic and I agree to ignore it. I goes on for a while, then off for a while (days, weeks), but nothing seems to be wrong. It doesn't flash and there is no correlation with anything, so I'm not worried.
