As is common with many Direct Injected engines, the intake valves eventually suffer from carbon build up. It was an undiagnosed problem for several years - injectors were replaces several years ago and multiple failures of the PCV valve. Also a rear main seal was replaced a couple of years ago as well. Likely all these were as a result of the carbon build up. I finally researched and diagnosed the issue myself and now all is mostly well. I have also devised a means of regular maintenance (injecting a special cleaner upstream of the intake throttle body prior to oil changes) to alleviate a repeat of the carbon build up. Fuel mileage is about 35% better (measured - not guesstimate) now that air can get in where it is needed. The buildup was severe - about a 50% restriction of x-sect. diameter.
87000 mi

US $800
Coolant fluid leak. Replaced water pump with updated design. Made sure proper installation instructions were followed. Going on 2 years with no leaks.

79000 mi

US $125
Check engine light came on. Had repair shop diagnose the problem. Diagnosis code indicated that my fuel mixture was too lean at idle. The mechanic recommended resetting the check engine light and seeing if the problem reoccured as the issue can be caused by poor quality fuel. As of the writing of this, the problem has not reoccured.
63840 mi

C $800
Vehicle running rough on start-up. Excess carbon build-up on valves diagnosed (apparently a common problem with VW direct injection engines). Dealer was non-committal re: an apparent design flaw with engine. Valves cleaned: cost $800.

53000 mi Engine shut down at the end of an freeway off ramp. I started it back up, pressed the accelerator to keep the RPMs up while in park, and then switched to drive as the RPMs dropped. Dealer replaced the intake manifold. Car shut off again at the end of a different freeway off ramp. Had to restart it. Dealer said there was something wrong with the fuel pump and the cylinders needed to be cleaned of carbon build up. Engine was still not running smoothly and needed to be kept for a full diagnostic. Dealer found a problem in the fuel supply.
80000 mi
