The key docking unit and the keys themselves needed replacing. The key docking unit is 'a superfluous weak spot' - I think the last run of Freelander2s/FL2s had a simpler, more reliable proximity key. Earlier models had an unnecessarily complex unit that you poked a bulky fob into the dash and then pressed a button to start. Tuggeranong Auto Electrics - long-term friends and highly recommended! - undoubtedly undercharged me - replacing the unit (genuine part) and trying to get the aftermarket keys to operate as they should. Ultimately that part of the job was done by Canberra Car Keys - also recommended! It's been the only expensive repair for this car, which has been super-reliable. Dropped and broken key-fobs undoubtedly didn't help. Next unit may last longer than the original - which lasted ten years. But where keys go wrong in 'modern' cars - it's never cheap. |
