2004 Audi A8 Pros and Cons at TrueDelta: A beautiful car in styling, performance and engineering. by jimroy

It is effectively an SUV with lift suspension, all wheel drive. It has a no rust aluminium body. So a great winter car that will never get stuck in the snow.
It is high performance - 8 cylinders and oversized brakes. But if you drive it modestly these components won't wear quickly. Engine does 2000 RPM at 80 miles (120 km) an hour. I had to accelerate rapidly in an emergency situation - petal to the metal and it only went to 3500 rpm (red line is 7000). Brakes last over 36,000 miles (60,000 km).
There are some real deals in well maintained used vehicles. However, it would be best to wait for used diesels (around 2016) as fuel consumption costs will continue to rise.
The nicest car I have ever driven and I am spoiled for life.
Fuel economy
The Audi A8L is an interesting car if bought used. As it is a premium model, it is often bought on lease or by rich people. It is also all aluminium - when sold they are usually in great condition.
The fuel economy is good for its size - about 12 miles a gallon city and 22 highway. For an 8 cylinder, all wheel drive performance car this is not bad. However high gas prices make it nota very economic choice for the gas version.
With the introduction of the diesel version means used vehicles will come onto th eused market in about three years (2106). Fuel consumption will be better.
Handling
The car is a dream to drive - all wheel drive, aluminium body, lift suspension - a perfect winter car. It is also very roomy - great for tall people.
I don't know if I will be able to buy another A8L but it has been the best car I have ever owned and I am spoiled for life.
Exterior styling
Aluminum - while it won't rust you are always vulnerable to having the car written off by the insurance company for relatively minor damage.
Paint looks great even at 9 years.
Audio & nav systems
DVD Nav needs a new DVD for updates. My 2004 DVD NAV works intermittantly now.
The nicest car I have ever driven. I doubt I can find anything better to replace it in the used market for a reasonable price.
