2011 - 2012 Ford F-150
Errantdriver
I currently own a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado doublecab with 160,000 miles. It is a lower end model. It needs about $5,000 worth of body work to look good again. It has performed very well and so far, proven to be mostly reliable, with no more than possibly one repair costing for the last several years. I purchased it in 2014 when it had 100k miles.
I have an opportunity to purchase / upgrade to 2012 Ford F-150 Supermax (double cab) with 118,000 miles. It has a few more techno-gadgets (back up camera on a decent sized screen, etc) and looks like it is in better shape, both interior and exterior. However, it has a salvage title due to a rollover that, per available photos, mostly affected the driver side's of the vehicle.Selling price is around $12k. I plan to have a mechanic check it out, including a damage / repair inspection.
Per Truedelta, the 2008 Chevy Silverado has a better reliability rating (medium/high green zone); the 2012 Ford F-150 less so (borderline yellow).
Setting aside Chevrolet vs. F-150 brand loyalties, if the F-150 inspection identifies no major issues, should I stick with what I have, or go with the upgrade, keeping in mind that reliability is important to me?
(If I purchase the F-150, I will not repair the Chevy truck's bodywork, and sell it for around $7k.. I end up paying about $5-6k, net, for the Ford.)
