I recorded over 42 MPG on a 2500 kilometer trip from the West Coast, and we normally average over 24 MPG in the city.

4dr Sedan 151-horsepower 2.3L I4 5-speed manual FWD
Great balance of power and fuel economy. Average approximately 30 MPG in around town driving or high speed 70 mph plus Interstate cruising. At 55 MPH will deliver 38 MPG on long trips. Very consistent fuel economy after 55,000 miles.

4dr Sedan 145-horsepower 2.3L I4 5-speed manual FWD
While not as high as my 1986 Mazda 626 at 34mpg the Mazda was not as quick. So I am quite satisfied with the 32-33mpg I currently get.

Fuel economy, although not great is good. Helps my daughter on a limited budget.

4dr Sedan 145-horsepower 2.3L I4 4-speed automatic FWD
I could go for days without filling it up if I drove like a normal person. I put almost 200 miles on it in two weeks so that good fuel economy helped.

Fuel economy at 30 mpg (average) was OK but not spectacular. I blame the 4 speed automatic for that and suspect I might have done better with the 5 speed manual.

It was only rated at 24mpg by Consumer Reports - and with a smaller, less powerful engine than the 3 (which was rated at 25)

Economy is somewhat disappointing for a compact - I average 22 mpg around town.

Poor in town and highway. Extremely disappointed. I would not mind the 20mpg if this was translated into 0-60 times of 6 seconds - but it is not. I have no idea where the fuel goes - it is certainly not converted into power.

I wasn't personally very focused on fuel economy, but the SVT wasn't very fuel efficient for a fairly light car with a normally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine. The original EPA ratings were 21 mpg city, 25 mpg highway. Using the 2008+ adjustments, they'd be 18/23 if the car was available today.

Suburban fuel economy is acceptable, at nearly 30 mpg. But on the highway, with the engine spinning well over 3,000 rpm, fuel economy also struggles to crack 30. Many much larger, much more powerful cars achieve better highway fuel economy. Some owners have fitted the fifth gear from the related transmission in the Mazda6 to get more of an overdrive.
