Hyundai Genesis 4.6 2009

2009 - 2010 Hyundai Genesis

I am considering a 2009 Genesis 4.6 with only 20k original Carfax miles. Please let me know if any concerns or likes about the 4.6 vs the 3.6. Any other helpful information would be appreciated! Thanks

The only powertrain problem worth noting is that on the 4.6L, the ZF 6 speed auto has a higher failing rate than the 3.8L. When I drove one, I thought the V6 3.8L had plenty of power. The 4.6L V8 is much more thirsty, but it gives you over 80 more HP. To fully use the V8's power, you need premium gas or else you will lose 12 HP. The 3.8L has a more reliable transmission.

The main problem affecting the 2009 Genesises are brake pedals that become so spongy that it is difficult to safely stop the car. There are 6 reports of crashed because the brake pedal went to the floor and didn't stop quickly enough. No deaths that I am aware of. It is unlikely to have this problem, but it is the number 1 problem people are having.

Most reliable cars made. Go for it. No issues except some flaking of door handles Inside and Out. My coworker still drives his 2009 and he is a mechanic but he doesn't baby or do any real maintenance on his CAR. He has about 250k miles hard miles on his 8cyl beast which he feeds cheapo gas like arco or 7-11 cheapest regular unleaded gas all the time. He does use synthetic and changes it once a year and a new oil filter...i remember I changed his brakes and rotor once since it was squawking so bad and the rotor was so warped due to no brake pads and wondered how he stopped...mind you I carpooled with him to work...how my life was on the edge back then and didn't know it. Genesis is a well made car even the interior.

Your friend is a mechanic but does no work on his own car, not even his own brakes?

Funny isn't it. And also very odd. But realistically most mechanics have 2 or more cars..one for just going to work and one for the family. The one for work we consider as fix it just enough to get there. Scheduled maintenance is grossly ignored Secondly there are so many customers to take care of so more focus on them and their cars. Ofcourse he takes care of his family car because the wife and kids safety.
I probably fall into this category as well. I drive to work in a 1992 Toyota Corolla with ungodly miles . it's probably closing in on 410k miles but the odometer stopped at 375k. Been at 375 for the past 4 years. I figured I have AAA so that's some comfort since I have no tools in the car. It's a shame, but it goes and I'm happy it takes me to work and back. My friend's motto for his work car " it gets me there." Well I cannot completely follow his philosophy completely but it works for him. For 30 years since I have known him, he has never driven a brand new car or even a shiny car. It's quite embarrassing I agree. All his customers ask the same question you do and have balls of laugh when they see his old dented muffler missing with one wiper on the drivers side only, parked right in front of the shop. You would think the customers would not bring their cars in for maintenance but it's the opposite....
