Reviewed: 2006 Jeep Commander

4dr SUV 235-horsepower 4.7L V8 5-speed shiftable automatic AWD w/low range

Why the 2006 Jeep Commander?

Exterior styling

Rugged, looks like tank

Price or payments

Inexpensive; bought as a 5 year old used vehicle

Ride smoothness

Very smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride

Powertrain performance

4.7L V8 had decent power but the 5 speed transmission works very well to make the most of it. Manual shift gate feature is well executed.

Handling

Handles surprisingly well considering this is a tall, heavy vehicle with such a smooth ride. Not much body roll and decent amount of grip. Tight turning circle. Handles like a much smaller vehicle.

Why Not the 2006 Jeep Commander?

Fuel economy

Mpg sucks. In mixed driving I can get close to 16 if I baby it but driven normally I can only get 14-ish.

Cargo capacity

Not a lot of cargo room due to very tall rear floor. 3rd space is not terrible buttge seating position is awkwardly high.

Materials & workmanship

Some cheapmaterials used in the interior and thegeneral fit and finish of body panels/etc is poor on some areas.
