Powertrain performance
The Mazda3 has better than average performance for a compact car in this price point. The gearing of the car seems to be optimized for better than average acceleration on both streets and highways.
Reliability & durability
The Mazda3 has had no repairs, and has only received regular maintenance. Likewise I have used this car for more than 55k miles in two years including several 12+ hour drives with no issues at all.
Ride smoothness
The Mazda3 has relatively taught suspension with does decrease ride smoothness. While the passengers will not feel each bump in the road, it is still worse that most cars I tested in its class.
Quietness
The Mazda3 has a fair bit of wind noise, and road noise. I had attempted to change tires but did not find a decrease in the amount of sound generated in the cabin. I suspect the Mazda3 does not have sufficient sound deadening.
Cargo capacity
The Mazda3 does have fold down rear seats, however the trunk area on the sedan model I have has a very small opening. This means, that although a fair amount of cargo can fit inside the Mazda3 it is difficult to get it in. The rear doors do not open wide
