Reviewed: 2007 Mercedes-Benz R-Class

4dr SUV 302-horsepower 5.0L V8 7-speed shiftable automatic AWD

Why the 2007 Mercedes-Benz R-Class?

Powertrain performance

I like the 7-speed transmission. It shifts smoothly and quickly. It accelerates surprisingly quickly.

Driving position & visibility

The seating position is high and allows for good forward and side-to-side visibility.

Rear seat room & comfort

There is excellent legroom in the middle and rear seats. All four recline.

Cargo capacity

Cargo capacity is excellent. We transported a full-size single door refigerator with the rear door closed. Loading is easy using the rear and side doors.

Why Not the 2007 Mercedes-Benz R-Class?

Fuel economy

F-E is poor because of the weight to power ratio. The vehicle is heavy. With the available power, it is easy to drive faster and to maneuver through slower traffic. Frequent acceleration results in lower gas mileage.

Controls and instruments

The mirror controls are poorly designed. The NAV controls are practically unusable by the driver unless the car is parked.

Materials & workmanship

The interior textures are not of high quality. The vinyl is more utilitarian and less like other Mercedes vehicles.
