Reviewed: 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL

2dr Hardtop conv. supercharged 493hp 5.4L V8 5-speed shiftable automatic RWD

Why the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL?

Exterior styling

Beautiful car, with the top up (hardtop) or down. Very classic GT styling, not too brash..

Powertrain performance

Extremely powerful, close to 500 hp and loads of torque. Power comes on pretty smoothly, except when really "on it", when the supercharger shows it's stuff. Easy to control. Would like to have had the option of a nmanual transmission, though.

Fuel economy

Awful! Big V-8 gets approximately 14 mpg, if I'm lucky!

Warranty, maintenance cost

Maintenance cost is fine, until the warranty expires, then every trip to the Dealer can get quite expensive. Especially for the "fancy" ABC/ESP suspension braking system that can cost a veritable fortune to repair. From what I've heard, M-B has done away with this system on the newer cars.

Ride smoothness

Very.

Why Not the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL?

Conclusion

Too expensive to repair when warranty expires. Probably wouldn't purchase another one, although an all-around fabulous car.
