2019 Nissan LEAF 4dr Hatch

147-horsepower Electric 1-speed automatic FWD

663 mi After attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle would not enter "ready to drive" mode. Flashed multiple warning errors: "Malfunction See Owner's Manual", "Push brake and power switch to drive", "Warning Service EV System Power Reduced", and "Warning Service EV System". After multiple cycles of turning the vehicle on and off, it eventually allowed me to enter "Ready to Drive" mode. Dropped off the vehicle at Nissan dealer on 7/19/2019 for repair Dealer stated: After running all of our electrical test and doing the diagnoses we were able to find out that our issues were stemming from your 12 volt battery. The vehicle was reading it as a dead cell and running off the main battery only. After replacing the battery all the codes went away test drove and everything is finally back to normal. We are charging your vehicle now and will do another electrical test to be safe." While driving on 7/20/2019, I noticed a bit of water on the floormat. After a 35 minute drive, the puddle had grown to be a substantial amount of water. I suspected that the condensation drain line from the air conditioner was not properly connected. I had just installed rubber floormats the night before, so it's likely this issue has been present from the start but simply wasn't noticed because the carpet was absorbing the water and it wasn't obvious. I called dealer, then dropped off the vehicle. They confirmed that the tubing for the air conditioner drain was not properly connected. Sounds like a simple fix, and issue appears to be resolved.
5000 mi 12 volt battery was dead

2017 Nissan LEAF 4dr Hatch

107-horsepower Electric 1-speed automatic FWD

1400 mi Two bolts were missing from A/C line brackets under the hood. Apparently missed during manufacture. The dealer installed new ones.
2052 mi The SiriusXM tuner would freeze and stutter, like a skipping CD, but faster. Usually the radio buttons were still responsive, but I had to turn the radio off at least once to stop it. Not a huge deal, since we decided to not renew the subscription. However, the "head unit" does a lot of functions, including navigation, radio, etc. I want everything to work for peace of mind and for future resale. The dealer replaced the unit on the THIRD visit. This felt like a waste of time. On the first visit they said they couldn't replicate the problem. I asked the tech to come out to the car with me at the end of the visit and the fault happened. On the second visit they ran diagnostics and couldn't find anything wrong, but said they would replace it anyway. The tech remembered the problem, thankfully. On the third visit they had failed to record my appointment, but the unit they had ordered was in stock. So they said they'd do it that day -- and that programming it required ~3 hours. After stressing that I needed the car by 5:00 in order to pick up my kids who are in car seats, I took the loaner. I called back at 4:00 and they said it wouldn't be ready that day. So I had to scramble to find car seats to get my kids, then go pick up my car the next day. Bottom line: The main frustration was with how the dealer handled the repair. This is a big variable with a new-car purchase, since the time and hassle far outstripped the value of the SXM tuner. (Though having all functions working is important to me for resale.)
17341 mi Driver window started making a LOT of noise during operation, but continued to work, just more slowly. The problem appeared after picking up the car from the last dealer visit, making this the THIRD trip in a month. The part was replaced and resolved the problem.

3000 mi Modem for telematics was not working...

My 12-volt battery started having problems. The car would start but the breaking system wouldn’t work for a few seconds or the car would move forward even though it did not I push on the excelerator. I had to get towed to two dealers to get the battery replaced because the Leaf technician was gone at the first dealer.

Ok, it's outside the 24,000 mile limit. But the 12v battery died, rendering a fully electric car incapable of motion. That's pretty nuts for a 3-model-year old vehicle. There are many reports of the early death of these batteries.
60000 mi

US $110
12v lead acid battery died after 3 years of service, which is the longest a 12v battery has ever lasted in the thing. I think I'm on 12v battery number 6 or something crazy like that. There must be an issue with overcharging or something, as many other Leaf owners have noted the same trend towards them eating 12v batteries.
33000 mi

US $168

10700 mi Telecommunications unit (TCU) was designed by Nissan to use the 2G cellular network which is being shutdown so needed to upgrade to newer cellular connection. 11000 mi Dead battery 3 days in the row in the morning. Dealer could not replicate even with it left there for 24h.

25000 mi Seat heaters and steering wheel heater shuts down after reaching proper temperature. Once this happens, you can't use it again for another 5-10 minutes, even in -20F weather. Just like last time, dealer told me it's working as designed.

101000 mi

US $2000
B1018 Code - Passenger Seat sensor failure which is a multi thousand dollar repair. The part itself is a weight sensor but with it out the car disables airbags. have to buy a new seat, all the controllers/motors/sensors as a package and have them installed by a dealer. Can't put the part in yourself because it takes a dealer tool to set the codes for the part to match and turn the airbags back on. Dealer won't let you bring in a part from a salvage vehicle, they want the sale of the new parts.

7000 mi Nissan acknowledges that several hundred vehicles are burdened with this issue, yet REFUSE to fix, unless owner whines, complains, bitches, moans, gripes, and cajoles corporate into fixing it. Although I LOVE the car, I HATE the company.
