Introduction

In brief, this car is a little low on power, but only if your other car is an E500. Needs new tires. It will carry a child in a booster seat, and they will love every second they're back there. Its seats are great, but the heaters are a joke - if you live in Canada you might care.

Visibility to the front corners is really bad, and the turning radius surprisingly wide.

Observed fuel economy around 9.8 l/100 in the city.

Why the 2017 Subaru BRZ?

Past personal experience

We traded our diesel Golf in for this, and what a bargain it has proven to be.

It has proven to be an entertaining drive, everything you have heard it to be.
I am 6'1, my wife is 5'8, and we have a 6 year old. Does it toddler? Heck yeah. His first words after his first highway ramp? "I LOVE IT." The car feels a little deliberately low-tech to save on weight. Points for the clever use of a square display, having a piece of plastic strung across it, to split the digital instrument cluster in two. Looking in the engine bay, I have to wonder if they made the most of the space available. It's cavernous in there compared to the way FWD cars are packed together.

Why Not the 2017 Subaru BRZ?

Front seat support & comfort

The seat heaters are an absolute joke. We thought they were broken. No, they're just terrible. If you live in regular -10c weather you will want a a plug-in seat warmer.
The seats themselves are fantastic for driving.
Driver's seat does not slide forward when you move the seatback to access the back seat. Seems fine, who wants to reset their seat position every time.
The passenger seat does get loose when you pop the seat back up, but the chair slides around loose and left to gravity, will sit at the rearmost spot. Might be nice if it could sit in a divot at the full frontmost position.

Color choices

There is no excuse for a short colour list in 2018. Enough said.

Other Features of the 2017 Subaru BRZ

Tires

Having put good winter tires on the car - Michelin X-Ice - it is now obvious how bad the OEM tires are. Use them up to learn how to handle the car properly, waste your first track day with them, but you will want to upgrade.

Conclusion

Honda used to mean "fun second car". That's now spelled BRZ.

Thanks for letting me know I did not miss anything on my FR-S by not getting seat heaters. I love winter and don't really need them, but wondered what I was missing. Despite my 2nd gen MINI being a lemon, the the seat heaters on those could be almost burning in their intensity.

I agree that the seats themselves are fantastic for driving. Best car seats I've owned that were from the factory, and better than some of my friends' cars that they paid a big upcharge to get Recaros on.

Enjoy your BRZ and I do look forward to eventually replacing the stock tires.
