Total CVT Rebuild. Transmission completely shot after 154,00 miles. Yes had to have Outback flat bedded to trans shop for rebuild after local mechanic identified it as a trans problem. Shop gave me 3 options, a partial rebuild for $3400.00, full rebuild for $5400.00 and $7200.00 for new trans plus installation. If this had happened closer to 100,000 miles probably could have qualified for new Subaru CVT warranty. 95% of all mileage done on highway and I had trans fluid changed at 100,000 miles. If you break the tab then the whole assembly needs to be replaced, and replacing it involves disassembling the bumper. Changed headlight bulbs.

It turned out that the throw out bearing went out, and that is what trashed the clutch, so it was not really a maintenance trip. Clutch cost $500 just for parts. They ended up draining the transmission oil, which is not supposed to be necessary, and they had to remove the front drive shafts, which I am not sure is necessary either.
