Reviewed: 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara

4dr SUV 185-horsepower 2.7L V6 5-speed automatic AWD w/low range

Why the 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara?

Price or payments

Great price for fully loaded SUV and leather seats too, very nice.

Fuel economy

Smaller 2.7 V6 get great gas mileage, even though it has all wheel drive, 25mpg is common.

Interior styling

Nice big leather seats. everything is in easy reach. Gives the feeling of a much bigger SUV

Feature availability

Exelent keyless entry/start system, best I ever seen. Nice leather seats, power moon roof, 5 disk in dash stereo with sub woofer, many many nice features and options for the price.

Safety & braking

Advanced, dual-stage driver and weight-sensing front-passenger airbags Supplemental Restraint System Front seat-mounted side impact airbags Anti lock brakes have Electronic Brake-force Distribution Electronic Stability Program with Traction Control System

Why Not the 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara?

Powertrain performance

Automatic transmision will down shift on even the smallest hill and not shift up. At times the revs will be just below red line and it will not upshift. This will damage the motor over time. Suzuki will NOT REPAIR OR REPROGRAM - Go for the 5 speed

Dealer practices

Problem with the Automatic transmision not upshifting, cant get anything more than told thats the way they are. Still not fixed. VERY VERY UNHAPPY with the constant shifting of the AUTOMATIC - Get the 5 speed stick.

Past personal experience

Rear wheel aligment was out of spec right from the factory, this ruined the rear tires. They fixed the aligment but I am out a set of very expensive tires. This took 2 trips to the dealer to get rectified. OEM oil filter are made in China.

Controls and instruments

Little things like buttons on the sterring wheel not lighted for night driving, odd wiper switch, dash lights dimmer switch does not have enough ajustment. You would expect better from Japan.

Brand reputation & image

Although the Grand Vitara is a nice SUV - Suzuki has a poor past reputation for low quality cars. This has not changed to date. It is easy to see how Hyundi has been able to out sell Suzuki from the start.Trying to get problems solved is just to difficult
