Reviewed: 2004 Toyota 4Runner

4dr SUV 245-horsepower 4.0L V6 4-speed automatic 4WD w/low range

Why the 2004 Toyota 4Runner?

Cargo capacity

5000# tow capacity with standard factory hitch and wiring harness. It can tow my 2000# camper trailer easily. Plus I have lots of room and leftover cargo capacity.

Powertrain performance

Can use 4wd HI on pavement because of limited slip center differential. Center differential can be locked. Excellent 4wd LO. Smooth transmission. LOTS of power and torque from the V6.

Safety & braking

It has traction control and stability control, the latter has been shown to be of great benefit in reducing skids and consequent collisions and rollovers.

Materials & workmanship

Nicely put together and tight as a drum. No squeaks or rattles.

Why Not the 2004 Toyota 4Runner?

Price or payments

Being a Toyota, they are expensive, even when buying used, as I did. On the other hand, it holds its value well.

Controls and instruments

The cruise control is an extremely dated design. The climate controls are strange, though they work once you figure them out.
