Reviewed: 2004 Toyota 4Runner

4dr SUV 245-horsepower 4.0L V6 4-speed automatic 4WD w/low range

Why the 2004 Toyota 4Runner?

Cargo capacity

Never used to tow, but interior cargo is excellent. Fold down rear seats allow loading 16 bags of 2 cu. ft. mulch, etc. Comfortably spacious for five persons. luggage container can be fitted to roof rack.

Reliability & durability

No unscheduled maintenance (or warranty work) in six years of ownership and over 60k miles. The thing just keeps ticking and never misses a beat.

Powertrain performance

V6 offers plenty of torque and smoothly, quickly, effortlessly accelerates the vehicle to speed, even on regular (87 octane) fuel (rated f/premium). Transmission up and down shifts are smooth and keeps the vehicle in the correct torque/power zone.

Materials & workmanship

High quality, rugged finishes throughout. Design minimizes high wear (debris flung from tires contained in wheel wells, under running board, etc.). All are professionally fitted together, exterior, interior, and under the hood.

Why Not the 2004 Toyota 4Runner?

Ride smoothness

It rides like what it is; a truck (body-on-frame, not uni-body). The overall ride is controlled, well-damped shock response, minimum body roll w/the XREAS shocks. But the suspension is slightly stiffer than a comparable domestic or crossover.
