The engine is very durable. It is not uncommon to see a Corolla with over 300k miles on the first engine. The entire powertrain in reliable, including the transmission. People call them cockroaches because they don't die. It is possibly one of the top 5 most reliable cars in the last 20 years. Just avoid the 2009 model year because they had some water pump failures that year.

No, that is not too old as long as it has been maintained. Be sure to get a CarFax and a PPI.

Pre-purchase inspection. That is when you pay your mechanic to inspect the car you are going to buy before you buy it(that is the key)so that you won't have any surprise repairs because the last owner didn't take care of it. Things like the timing chain/belt and head gasket are inspected.
