Golf R Oil burn? Reliable?

Ask the People Who Own One:

2015 - 2022 Volkswagen Golf
mleger

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a Golf R - 2015 or 2016. I've read reports on the Audi S3 engine, which I believe is exactly the same as the Golf R, being an oil burner. Car and Driver reported this issue. Anyone have any feedback? I would also like to know if anyone's had one with more than 50k miles on theirs. There is a 2016 for sale with 70k on it, has to be highway miles, and I'm wondering how the engine/trans/electrical hold up. I'm looking mostly at manual trans, but auto would be OK too.

Thank you for any help you might be able to offer.

I would check the Golf forums. My opinion is that the car won't go much longer without requiring some moderately expensive repairs. VW and Audi engines tend to burn oil. I recently drove my friend's 2009 Audi A3 2.0T and the oil light came on while I was test driving it. He added oil just 2 days before because he knows to frequently check the oil level since he knows it burns/leaks oil. He just didn't know it was that severe. He is getting rid of it as soon as possible because it is getting excessive and killing the engine. It's a fun car, but not when it needs an engine replacement. His car has 140k miles (mostly highway mileage I think) and he takes care of it meticulously, but sometimes that isn't enough.

Thank you for your feedback Lectrofuel. I checked the boards and also found another 2016 Golf R with 15k on it. The boards all discussed the difference between the FSI engines, which are oil burners, and the TSI engine, which apparently is not.

I am in the process of purchasing the Golf R and will input information about the car as I know it.

Wow! 15k is a lot better than 70k assuming they are closely priced. Enjoy the car!
