2012 Volkswagen Golf / GTI Pros and Cons at TrueDelta: Owner Pros and Cons by watmough

I bought this car because it was great to drive, and because I was so impressed with the 'flappy paddle' DSG gearbox. Sadly after a year, I really just wanted to go back to driving a regular manual.
rnI did have a warranty repair (water pump) and the dealerships involved were excellent. Oil changes and the like are covered for 36k miles / 3 years.
rnThe GTI is one of the single most impressive cars I've ridden in, let alone owned. So high quality and teutonic.
Controls and instruments
All controls feel like they will last. Everything is high quality, and feels like it.
Handling
Handling is great. The car tightens around you and can be hustled around easily and confidently.
Reliability & durability
My GTI had a water pump failure inside of 20k miles. Other than that, all was good.
Insurance cost
Insurance isn't too bad, but depreciation killed me over a years ownership. Maybe on a par with other brands, but in line with high out of warranty dealership repair costs.
Tires
Stock Dunlops (A/S) are noisy and not especially grippy.
Traded it in. Had one failure and was scared of more post-warranty. DSG gearbox a high potential cost down the line.
