Powertrain performance
The Mk. V GTI is a very fun car to drive. It strike an excellent balance of speed, handling, and practicality.
Warranty, maintenance cost
I purchased my 2008 VW GTI 12 months ago and have already spent over $4000 on repairs. The costs are so astronomical and frequent that I refuse to ever buy a Volkswagen the rest of my life.
Reliability & durability
The 2008 VW GTI is a car that you can't depend on. It has tons of issues that affect a high percentage of owners, which include:
Diverter valve failure
PCV faliure
Cam wear
Fuel pump failure
Air conditioning failure
Misfires
Carbon build up
Avoid this car at all costs. Don't make the same mistake I did.

It is extremely expensive to own a Volkswagen. I've spent over $4000 repairing mine in the past 12 months alone.
