Interior styling
The materials used are above average in quality, and the design of controls and instrumentation is logical and easy to understand.

Safety & braking
While the braking in the Passat is average for this class, for the price, the number of safety features (airbags, other restraints, crumple-zones) is high.
Reliability & durability
While my own Passat has been fairly reliable, as a whole they have a reputation for electrical faults.
Dealer practices
The dealerships, and particularly the service shops, are inclined towards high-pressure sales tactics and they can be somewhat unpleasant to deal with when attempting repairs. In addition official dealership service rates are astronomical.
