Feb 2014

High-pressure touchless car wash caused water to leak through the third (anti-collision) brake light (they think). Cost was 1/2 typical for the water test. Even though the car is out of warranty VWoA covered the cost of part replacement. The voice-activation button on the steering wheel only dials the last number manually dialed (does not activate voice control of the phone). Dealer says this button is faulty. VWoA says they'll cover the cost out-of-warranty.

Had engine cleaned in Dec. Engine misfired and dealer recommended manual clean which strips the engine. Said it was due to direct injection not cleaning the whole gasket and a frequent problem with these engines. Engine didn't have any power for overtaking. According to dealer it was a faulty coil and others will soon need replacing. Wasn't related to earlier repair they said. New coil under warranty fixed the problem.

Air was always moist inside the air and you had to run the AC to see out the window. As is common with many Direct Injected engines, the intake valves eventually suffer from carbon build up. It was an undiagnosed problem for several years - injectors were replaces several years ago and multiple failures of the PCV valve. Also a rear main seal was replaced a couple of years ago as well. Likely all these were as a result of the carbon build up. I finally researched and diagnosed the issue myself and now all is mostly well. I have also devised a means of regular maintenance (injecting a special cleaner upstream of the intake throttle body prior to oil changes) to alleviate a repeat of the carbon build up. Fuel mileage is about 35% better (measured - not guesstimate) now that air can get in where it is needed. The buildup was severe - about a 50% restriction of x-sect. diameter.
