Why Not the 2002 BMW 5-Series?

Fuel economy

5 Series was terrific car but very poor on gas and used premium fuel. We knew about the mileage when purchased but this was one of the factors making us switch as we have 2 new drivers that would have kept this car driving more hours at a higher cost.

Insurance cost

Insurance company rated this car almost like a race car when new drivers (not 5 or 6 star) were added to the car. The car held depreciation in control but the insurance factor was a huge negative. Comparing insurance companies showed big variations.

Dealer practices

Visiting a dealership was fun. The salespeople judged us by our looks and we found no reason to go back for service. Being prejudged made us laugh as they honestly overcharged for everything from sales to service and once outside warranty never went back.

Powertrain performance

The power of the 3 liter motor coupled with RWD created poor winter traction as the transmission was unable to control tire spin until the motor control cut in reducing power output from the motor. Lots of power but very poor winter driving performance.
