Why the 2006 BMW X3?

Handling

The handling is amazing. You forget you are driving a 4,000lb SUV. It handles better than many "sports cars" and instills a great sense of confidence.

Safety & braking

Stopping distances are shorter and more controlled than most cars and of course far better than any SUV.

Powertrain performance

It takes around 10K miles for the engine to break-in, but once it does, it's a blast. It has great throttle response with smooth quick downshifts when needed. If it were any quicker, it would be scary.

Driving position & visibility

It gives a great view of the road like an SUV, but the seating is more sporty or "cockpit" feeling. The seat is firm, but very supportive and welcome on long trips.

Reliability & durability

I've only encountered the most minor problems – a bad airbag sensor in a seat and a bad Sirius radio tuner. Otherwise, it's been problem-free driving for almost 30K miles.

Why Not the 2006 BMW X3?

Price or payments

The base price is reasonable, but adding options quickly pushes the price north of $45K. Depreciation has been very high, mainly because of it being an SUV having to battle high gas prices.

Fuel economy

City driving fuel economy is not bad for an SUV. I average around 16MPG battling heavy traffic and my need for "enjoying using the accelerator". Highway mileage is not so great. Cruising at 70-80MPH returns around 22MPG.
