Reviewed: 2004 BMW Z4

2dr Convertible 225-horsepower 3.0L I6 6-speed manual RWD

Why the 2004 BMW Z4?

Exterior styling

Classic roadster styling with a modern flair. Lots of compliments.

Materials & workmanship

Convertible top still looks like new after 6 years. Glass rear window. Trouble free engine. Smooth shifting transmission. 12 yr corrosion warranty. Free of rattles and annoying trim issues.

Handling

Low center of gravity for great cornering.

Powertrain performance

Smooth and quiet power delivery over the full range of engine speeds.

Fuel economy

Average 26-27mpg combined city/highway in daily commuter driving (no expressway)...even with some spirited driving.

Why Not the 2004 BMW Z4?

Cargo capacity

Limited trunk space, no towing capacity.

Quietness

Quiet for a convertible, but noisier than a hard top.

Ride smoothness

Initial OEM setup with run flat tires and poorly damped shocks is unsafe over rough roads. However, after switching to non-run flat tires and premium shock absorbers this Z4 handles rough roads very well.
