Problem ended up being a burnt/corroded electrical connection inside the rubber boot of the coil pack on cylinder number 4 only--the other 3 cylinders looked like new. It only took about 30 minutes to actually remove the old coil pack and reinstall the new one----but there were a couple hours of my time diagnosing the problem. Had intermittent check engine light and message on DIC to "...service active handing system..." or something to that affect--but this light and message would go away--don't recall specific message. Car felt like it was missing intermittently under slight load--but worsened to even show itself at idle as it got worst and then check engine light and message on DIC came in steady. Went to Auto Zone before check engine light came in steady and they checked for codes--but there were none! Noticed missing first time several months back--it went away--but then came back again and worsened fairly quickly. Car was driveable though.

Kept overheating and could not fix it. The dealer was great, gave me a rental for no charge for the week and attempted many repairs; thermostat, water pump, heater core, coolant tube and it still overheated so I traded it in on a 16 Malibu.
