Introduction

1st step in my buying process, sit in car for at least 10 minutes in the driving position. If it passes that test then consider it. if not move on. Only the Fiesta and the Fit remained. Fiesta had better handling, Fit had more room in the back/trunk.

Why the 2011 Ford Fiesta?

Handling

Haven't had so much fun since my 1995 VW GTI. Hill mode works well.

Fuel economy

Mixed bag. Pure highway exceeds 40mpg w/o effort. Lots of very short trips in town (less than 5 minutes total time) 28 MPG. Part may be the gas blend. The lower the average MPH the lower the MPG.

Materials & workmanship

Feels solid. Much better materials and general build quality, particularly in the interior than is competitors.

Ride smoothness

Quite good. Feels like a larger car, except on corners where it feels better.

Powertrain performance

Coming from a manual, the shifts are smooth. Its not a slushbox but it moves when pushed and has less trouble figuring out what gear to be in than I do in emergency situations, and I've been driving a manual for over 30 years.

Why Not the 2011 Ford Fiesta?

Driving position & visibility

With the rear head rests remove, visibility out the rear is very good. Have to be careful with them installed because I have to use the side mirrors more. This effects backing up primarily. On the highway, the extra wide angle mirrors work as advertized.

Rear seat room & comfort

Its cramped, but seems about the same as any other car in its size range. It was easier to get in and out of compared to a Mazda 2 and about the same as current generation Prius C. I wouldn't take anyone long distances in the rear, but I didn't expect to. We have a 2009 Prius which is our long distance carry people car. I wanted something with good handling and economy that was well built and that's what I got.

Conclusion

Fit, finish, handling. Good front seat comfort.
