TrueDelta Reviews the Real Gas Mileage of the Ford Mustang

Ford Mustang Real Gas Mileage: Cons
YearComment
2006 The performance of these cars is not without an obvious tradeoff. In EPA tests, the Mustang GT manages only 15 mpg city, but 25 mpg highway, with the manual transmission. With the optional six-speed automatic, the car can go a mile farther per gallon in the city. The Audi rates a little better in the city, but worse on the highway: 16/23. In my real-world suburban driving, the Mustang's trip computer most often reported averages in the 16-17 range. With a light foot I could nudge the average over 20, and even as high as 24, but what's the point of driving a Mustang GT like you would (or at least should) a Prius? On a 70-mph highway, with the big V8 spinning under 2,000 rpm in top gear, the trip computer reported a fairly impressive (for such a large, powerful engine in a fairly heavy car) 28 mpg. But if you want decent fuel economy in either car, you'll have to ditch the V8. The new EcoBoost four-cylinder achieves 22/31 with a manual transmission and 21/32 with the automatic. The Audi manages similar figures with a 220-horsepower 2.0T four-cylinder engine, but 17/26 with the manual and 18/28 with the automated dual-clutch transmission and the S5's supercharged V6. see full Ford Mustang review

YearBody/PowertrainComment
2011 2dr Coupe 412-horsepower 5.0L V8

V8, 412hp, 26mpg. Who thought those three things would ever go together. see full Ford Mustang review
2010 2dr Coupe 210-horsepower 4.0L V6
5-speed manual RWD
The 698 was a HP390, and got abou 9mph. I oped for the 6 because it has all the power I need and gets real world fuel economy equal to my Escapes. I consistantly get 23 plus in mixed driving see full Ford Mustang review
2009 2dr Coupe 300-horsepower 4.6L V8
5-speed manual RWD
For a 4.6L V8 using 87 octane, 20 city and 28 hwy is not bad. see full Ford Mustang review
2008 2dr Coupe 300-horsepower 4.6L V8
5-speed manual RWD
For a V8, I still get great fuel economy. I average 21mpg with combined city & highway, about 75% city. Only long highway trips, I average 27mpg at 70mph. see full Ford Mustang review
2007 2dr Coupe 300-horsepower 4.6L V8
5-speed manual RWD
Surprisingly, the V8 gets about 23-25 MPG highway driving IF you behave; better than my SUV. The Stang is my choice for my frequent 800+ miles trips once or twice per month. see full Ford Mustang review
2005 2dr Coupe 210-horsepower 4.0L V6
5-speed automatic RWD
Not bad at all for a sports car with a big six cyl. see full Ford Mustang review
2005 2dr Convertible 300-horsepower 4.6L V8
5-speed automatic RWD
If you drive it responsably, I easily get 22 mpg around town. At 65 mph I get 28 on the highway. see full Ford Mustang review

2013 2dr Coupe 420-horsepower 5.0L V8
6-speed manual RWD
19.6 MPG under tame driving (read: shifting at 2200rpms), 10.2 under agressive driving. see full Ford Mustang review
2012 2dr Coupe 305-horsepower 3.7L V6
6-speed manual RWD
I was hoping for a bit better than the 24 I'm getting in commuting duty. Car still has less than 2000 miles, so it may improve w/ summer blend gas and a more broken in engine. If I could get 26 I'd be much happier, but I'm not counting on it see full Ford Mustang review
2010 2dr Coupe 315-horsepower 4.6L V8

It flat out sucks. see full Ford Mustang review

2008 2dr Convertible supercharged 500hp 5.4L V8
6-speed manual RWD
Premium fuel is expensive and mileage with a blown 5.4 is not stellar. I would not recommend this as a daily driver but it makes a hell of weekend and evening toy. see full Ford Mustang review
2008 2dr Coupe supercharged 500hp 5.4L V8

12 mpg city is poor, hi way mpg of 22 is not too bad see full Ford Mustang review
2007 2dr Coupe 210-horsepower 4.0L V6

I checked mileage carefully, hoping it was possible to get better than 18-20 m.p.g.- not likey in everyday driving. see full Ford Mustang review
