Why the 2012 Honda Fit?

Powertrain performance

Throttle map makes the most of engine torque but it will happily wind out to the limiter in S-mode. Trans shifts either frugally or briskly depending on throttle position. Has a nice, growly intake noise. Sewing machine tick-over at idle is endearing.

Exterior styling

I think it's rather tidy and handsome though the nose is a bit long compared to the JDM models. Looks aggressive enough that some people assume it has a lot of HP. I especially dig the body-kit and alloys for 2012.

Handling

Nimble and responsive. Have yet to feel the VSC kick-in with 8/10 levels of aggressive driving. On the highway the wheel weights up nicely relative to speed. Even lets you kick out the tail a little at the limit before it plows. Corners flatly.

Controls and instruments

Honda still gets this right, even on their cheap cars. All interior controls are intuitive, feel of good quality and the action is generally well-damped. The steering wheel in particular is perfect.

Materials & workmanship

Main touchpoints are solid. Nothing has a rough edge. Even less common touchpoints are at least pleasant in texture. Hardly a squeak or rattle, doesn't flex over wacky surfaces. Fit and finish is overall very good. Panel gaps are tight and even.

Why Not the 2012 Honda Fit?

Ride smoothness

On rougher pavement with square-edged bumps this car will probably annoy you if you're not used to cars with sporty suspenders and short wheelbases. Apparently more sidewall and going with the Base model (no rear anti-sway) helps with this issue.

Driving position & visibility

I wish the wheel telescoped just a bit more and that the front cushion was longer. If you're over 6'2" this could be a deal-breaker if you have longer commutes. Also the visors are barely adequate.
