Why the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe?

Reliability & durability

I have had this car just over three years and it is my daily driver. It is driven year-around and my typical commute is through rural back roads. I am nearing 49k miles and I have had one minor cosmetic issue which was quickly and hassle-free dealt with under warranty. I had 47k miles and a cosmetic issue was corrected. I don't drive my car like I stole it, but I do not baby it at all. I have modified the suspension to improve cornering and feel and I typically exceed speed limits everywhere I go. I do keep-up with maintenance religiously. This car has been absolutely reliable and trouble-free. It is fun to drive, looks great and I am expecting to have it for a number of additional years. We like this car so much my wife bought an Elanta GT for herself.

Exterior styling

What can I say? Even the guy at work with a Porsche thinks my Gen Coupe looks great. The lines and proportions are simply gorgeous. For what I paid you simply cannot do better. An FR-S/BRZ? Not bad but second place in looks. I fell in love with the styling at a 2010 auto show.

Handling

I installed an after market larger rear sway bar and rigid collars (sub frame bushings). This car handles like it is on rails now. From the factory there is some understeer. I am nice and neutral now which makes it easy to kick the back out when I want to. I had forgotten over the years how much better a RWD platform is. I may never go back. Even in the winter this car is easy to handle with a near perfect balance.

Warranty, maintenance cost

A great warranty and I have had no unexpected costs associated with this car. I am meticulus about maintenance on all of my cars. I think the local dealer is pretty good which really helps.

Why Not the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe?

Fuel economy

For a 3400 pound car the fuel economy is really pretty good considering I have a turbo which I keep spinning up. The EPA numbers did not enter into my choice, however the manufacturer advertises 20 - 30 mpg which is a bit of a fantasy. A rating of 19 - 27 would be reasonable and kept a lot of people from complaining on the forums. I have personally seen 28 / 29 mpg on the highway so the 30 mpg is possible, but not practical. For a heavy turbo-charged RWD car my mileage is pretty good; just not what was advertised.

Ride smoothness

The ride is a bit harsh, but it is a sporty car. The 2013+ MY does have a smoother ride. I have always driven sporty cars so I find the ride quality just fine.

Brand reputation & image

Conclusion

I am happy with my choice and I like the fact that as a Hyundai it is viewed as an underdog. I take advantage of that. As I stated my wife just bought an Elantra GT which she loves. Actually, I kind of like it too.
