Reviewed: 2008 Land Rover Freelander

4dr SUV turbocharged 160hp 2.2L I4 Diesel 6-speed manual AWD

Why the 2008 Land Rover Freelander?

Safety & braking

This car has the abiity to take me whever I want to go and in all weathers

Fuel economy

I ran this car for 86,000 and it returned an average of 38.94 (imp) MPG whihc is about 10 MPG better than the Discovery Td5 that it replaced - one of my objectives given the fuel price rises in UK in 2008

Powertrain performance

After the 2 ton Discovery with similar torque, the Freelander is actually fun to drive. It's nimble in the corners and quite brisk accelerating

Why Not the 2008 Land Rover Freelander?

Reliability & durability

The manual trasnmission'sdual mass flywheel and clutch are not robust enough for an SUV. I had a replacment of both at 35,000 miles and OK thereafter but I sense da returning rumble whcih is why I replaced the car. I chose manual trans becuase of the better fuel economy (by at least 5 MPG) and the auto box is not withoutadverse durability reports

Feature availability

Compared with Discovery, Freelander has more limited ground clearnace which can be a concern off road

Other Features of the 2008 Land Rover Freelander

Dealer practices

I am lucky to have a great dealer just 12 miles away. He has well-trained technicians and has always done a good job (even if it took 2 visits). I have bought 3 new cars there and I feel like a valued cusotmer - I am quite technical and they know they cannot "blind me with science"

Conclusion

This is a good car and I will buy another one of the same or similar specifitation
