Reviewed: 2005 Land Rover LR3

4dr SUV 300-horsepower 4.4L V8 6-speed shiftable automatic AWD w/low range

Why the 2005 Land Rover LR3?

Rear seat room & comfort

Three rows of seats. Seven people can actually fit. Two child sets and an adult can fit in the second row. Two human beings can fit in the third.

Ride smoothness

The car is powerful without hesitation and roughness. Comfortable ride in all directions. Smooth acceleration, little movement up/down or laterally during driving maneuvers.

Quietness

The car is powerful without being noisy. Low engine noise, low road noise.

Exterior styling

Functional, attractive. Rounded edges were eschewed for straight lines, enhancing interior room. Bold looks.

Safety & braking

Stops on a dime for such a large vehicle. Many airbags.

Why Not the 2005 Land Rover LR3?

Fuel economy

The fuel economy is terrible. But it is hard to improve the mpg of such a functional and large vehicle. The car would be improved by greater use of aluminum, shutting down cylinders at high speed, and a hybrid drivetrain, even a mild start/stop one.

Reliability & durability

Overall, my car has been very reliable--particularly with respect to the major drivetrain components of the vehicle. However, items like the rear windshield wiper, the tailgate, the stereo, the horn, etc. have had numerous issues.
