Introduction

My second Mazda, very happy with previous car, Mazda Protege which was a 1997 and purchased new, drove for 16 years. Fewest repairs required of any car owned, including a Corolla. Hoping the 3 will be as good.

Why the 2013 Mazda Mazda3?

Fuel economy

30+mpg avg since new; starting to improve to around 33mpg per tankful, mixed driving, more town than highway

Handling

Very good handling, good steering feel, sporty to drive

Ride smoothness

Ride is on the firm side, due to sporty handling character, could be an area for improvement, the 2014 model is said to be better.

Front seat support & comfort

Nice contoured, form fitting seats offer plenty of support, quite comfortable.

Audio & nav systems

Has optional Bose stereo, good sound, audio controls on touch screen as well as the NAV, both work well.

Why Not the 2013 Mazda Mazda3?

Rear seat room & comfort

Rear seat a bit tight, needs more room back there.

Powertrain performance

Transmission reluctant to downshift (automatic trans) when going uphill; no doubt programmed to get better mileage. Manual trans might have been better choice. Otherwise, auto shifts effortlessly and is totally unobtrusive. Engine feels strong for the most part (standard SkyActive engine).

Quietness

Could be quieter but an improvement over previous Mazda Protege I owned for 16 years.

Other Features of the 2013 Mazda Mazda3

Exterior styling

I like the styling (hatchback model); a bit edgy and racy looking. Glad I got the Dolphin Gray, looks good.

Conclusion

Good choice for economy and sporty nature in a well rounded package. Not the best for rear seat room or if you prefer a soft ride over handling.
