Reviewed: 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

4dr Sedan 268-horsepower 3.5L V6 7-speed shiftable automatic RWD

Why the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Powertrain performance

Great new V6. Fantastic 7-speed automatic shifts when and as it should. Returns very good economy: low 20s in town; high 20s on the highway. Very linear acceleration, which cannot be had in peaky, turbocharged, competitors.

Materials & workmanship

Nearly flawless assembly and attention to detail. Very, very little feels cheaper than it should, which I cannot say about the 5 Series BMW or moreso, the Volvo S80. Everything mechanical, such as doors and accessories, operates with a quality feel.

Handling

Quite, supple, suspension. Comfortable ride, yet nimble handling. Cruises really nicely on long trips.

Interior styling

Everything seems to fall to hand, even the navigation system, after a brief introduction. Very nice wood trim with chrome accents. Controls have a substantial, reassuring heft to them, that infers quality.

Front seat support & comfort

Very comfortable, firm seating, even after very long drives. The combination of lumbar support and heat leaves me refreshed after eight- and nine-hour drives.
