Reviewed: 2006 Mercedes-Benz R-Class

4dr SUV 268-horsepower 3.5L V6 7-speed shiftable automatic AWD

Why the 2006 Mercedes-Benz R-Class?

Rear seat room & comfort

This has to be, by far, the roomiest Mercedes period. Back seat comfort, even in the third row, is unmatched.

Brand reputation & image

Of course, excellent quality reputation.

Fuel economy

Much better than expected for a very large and long vehicle. Close to 25MPG on longer trips.

Feature availability

Everything under the sun. Rear heated seats...really? I never use them, but neat.

Ride smoothness

Airmatic, although a ticking time bomb for failure, is amazingly smooth and comfortable. Firm and sporty when needed.

Why Not the 2006 Mercedes-Benz R-Class?

Reliability & durability

Transmission blew up at 30k. Covered under warranty, but bill was over 9k (reimbursed). Scary. Cup holder broke. Panoramic roof replaced twice. Front and rear windows replaced due to leaking. Out of warranty now and scared.

Cargo capacity

No stock towing package offered. Had to go elsewhere. With rear seat up, very little space for luggage.

Price or payments

Hefty initial retail cost.

Depreciation

Super depreciation. Only worth 50% after 3 years.

Past personal experience

I had a bad experience before with depreciation at trade in.
