Reviewed: 2006 Saab 9-7X

4dr SUV 291-horsepower 4.2L I6 4-speed automatic AWD

Why the 2006 Saab 9-7X?

Price or payments

I was able to purchase this vehicle 2 years old with 30k miles for $14k. The warranty lasts for 4 years/50k miles. Similar suv's from Honda, etc were much more expensive with much less content and no warranty.

Exterior styling

Lowered stance, good looking rims, sophisticated overall look. Understated with virtually no "look at me" bling.

Driving position & visibility

It is higher than a car, but not too high. Low enough that you don't have to climb "up" into it. Perfect for new mothers trying to get heavy baby seats into the back.

Handling

Better than most SUV's I drove. Not soft like an Escalade, Buick or Highlander, but much sportier than most everything.

Ride smoothness

The engine is buttery smooth and the ride is amazingly good for an SUV. Even a bit sporty. Not as soft as our Escalade, but certainly more fun to drive quickly.

Why Not the 2006 Saab 9-7X?

Materials & workmanship

The exterior plastic pieces are all cracking or falling off. The interior headliner was falling. Extra cupholder is extremely fragile.

Quietness

Allows waaaay too much wind noise through the doors and windows. High speeds are not pleasant because of the wind noise. High cross winds can break the door/body seal and are extremely loud when that happens.

Fuel economy

Not too bad. We avg 18.6 in mixed city driving and 22 at 80mph interstate. 24-25 is easily possible at 60mph.

Powertrain performance

The engine is great, but the 4 spd auto tranny is about 2 gears short. It shifts well and at the right times, but it needs a 6 speed to be really good.
