Reviewed: 2009 Subaru Forester

4dr SUV 170-horsepower 2.5L H4 5-speed manual AWD

Why the 2009 Subaru Forester?

Powertrain performance

Smooth running engine, satisfying gear level actuation, well spaced ratios, better fuel economy than previous Subarus owned, permanent all-wheel drive a must in snowy Quebec city, reliability (based on past experiece)

Handling

Felt a bit gingerly at first because of taller body but it has gained my confidence with miles driven. I can now throw it in some corners like my previous Subaru

Past personal experience

Interior space, cargo capacity and flexibility, good dealership, confident handling and comfortable ride on (mostly) bad road, all-wheel drive a very important feature when you get more than 10 feet of snow during winter

Rear seat room & comfort

It fits my kids (three) better than 2001 Outback, the rear seat "hump" is less proeminent than in other Subaru models (Outback namely), good hip and shoulder room

Why Not the 2009 Subaru Forester?

Materials & workmanship

After seeing the upgrade in material quality in actual Legacy from previous gen Legacy I would have hoped that the dash and door panel of the 2009 Forester were of the same high quality plastics. Plastics of the Forester feel thin and are scratch prone.
