Introduction

Bought the Fj used with 95k miles after seeing it on the used lot of a local toyota dealership. Not the first time I saw one, but I stopped in and looked at it closely. It was offered for way more than I expected to pay for a used vehicle with almost 100k miles. Long story short, I ended up buying it. Did I pay too much? That's hard to say since this is such a unique vehicle. It's actually worth more today than when I bought it. First time a vehicle has appreciated in my experience.

Camping in the desert (or anywhere) is easy. The FJ goes pretty much anywhere, especially since the trail teams edition has all the bells and whistle... both mechanical and electronic. And since its a Toyota, I don't have to worry too much about reliability. In the 30k miles I've put on the truck, I have to say its about the best all around vehicle I can think of. Off road is simple and easy, on the highway its much quieter and more comfortable than you might imagine, certainly quieter than a jeep. As my only vehicle it serves as a weekend fun truck, daily commuter, grocery getter, Dad taxi, you name it.

2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Love Letter

Exterior styling is unique. Rugged. Tough. It sits pretty high (it's stock but... again its the trail teams edition so has a more 'lift' than the base models). But not so high that its hard to get in and out of. I love the 'old school' headlamps and the 'squareish' design. The bumpers are very sturdy...

Conclusion

The only thing I don't like is the poor visibility... fortunately, the 2013 FJs come with a standard back up camera (image shows in the rear view mirror). A couple pot lid mirrors on the very large side mirrors helps a ton as well. The automatic transmission is pretty bulletproof, but the overdrive gear is too high. Gas mileage might be better, about 18mpg, but you have to consider that most large (and smaller) SUVs of this size are within +/- 2 mpg. And that's all I can fault it for, really.

The FJ Cruiser Trail Teams edition is truly a one of a kind vehicle. A true all-rounder. Easy to maintain (no carpet, just rugged plastic), reliable, safe, goes anywhere, and strangely appreciates in value. What's not to like?
