Toyota Matrix Fuel Economy: Pros
Year Body/Powertrain Comment
2013 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 5-sp manual FWD The matrix was listed as getting 37MPG. this ofcourse is hooey. I M very happy though with getting 31Mpg in it. I have been tracking it since i bought the car over a year ago and my mileage varies between 29 and 32, i drive out of town to work wiht a 15 minute commute and the majority of it never goes below 60km/hr. One thing i did notice is that use on the highway actually decreases the mileage. I had to go to Ottawa last fall, the weather was great, no norticable wind, i drove between 110 and 120km/hr etc and my mileage dropped to 27mpg for the trip. This engine is not that big so i think its not that good at those speeds simply because the engine size. in day to day driving its great though.
2009 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD should be good
2006 4dr Hatch 158-hp 2.4L I4 5-sp shiftable automatic FWD We purchased our Matrix NEW June of 2006, we now (21 Dec 2012) have 82,000 miles and I have monitored the mileage since we purchased the car. We get 24 in city driving and the VERY best we've got on a long freeway drive was 30mpg. Overall our mileage for the 80,000 miles is 27 which isn't great but is acceptable.
2005 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD Front WD w/ 4sp auto, great highway mileage, but not near the advertised ratings
2004 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD With K&N air intake, we got 34mpg on freeway, and it adds 5hp to 10hp when you need to pass other cars.
2004 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD Very good 28 city 33 highway
2004 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD Great fuel economy for a 1.8L with 30 MPG on the highway and a 500km range.
2004 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD Very economical on gas.
2004 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD Have never gotten less than 28 MPG, even when driving hard and in mountains. Usually get between 30 and 31 in the rolling country where I live. Have gotten over 34.
2003 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD Gets approx 32 miles per gallon on average
Toyota Matrix Fuel Economy: Cons
Year Body/Powertrain Comment
2009 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD good, but should be much better
2008 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 5-sp manual FWD It only gets about 25mpg in a mixed cycle. Fit would get 28mpg or better in same driving.
2007 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD expected the famous corolla frugality and efficiency - it has the same powertrain. we were totally disappointed. below freezing point, fuel consumption was scary: 17-20 l/100km. the best mileage we got was only 10 l/100 km.
2005 4dr Hatch 132-hp 1.8L I4 4-sp automatic FWD Not even close to what is advertised
