Toyota Yaris Preferred

2010 Toyota Yaris

4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

2009 Nissan Versa

4dr Sedan 107-horsepower 1.6L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Reliability & durability: Its a Toyota, simple as that. They are built to last.

Exterior styling: I found it to be less boxy than the Nissan Versa. Everything flows together, I like the prominent front end of the car.

Fuel economy: It gets amazing fuel economy, I drive it daily to and from work, constant city driving mainly, I use about 20$ a week in regular gas.

Dealership practices: The Toyota dealership is a little stuck up about their product but stand behind it 100%.

Brand reputation & image: Once again, it is a Toyota, I do not pay attention to recent recalls.

Why Not the Nissan Versa?

Exterior styling: It seems to boxy and tall for being a little sedan. Newer cars arent supposed to be boxy, that just isnt the style.

Handling: It flew across the road with the littlest tap of the steering wheel.

Price or payments: It was around 2000$ more than the Yaris with less features than come with my Yaris. The payments were more.

Discounts & incentives: The dealership did not offer any incentives at the time. Toyota gave me 1000$ off.

Ride smoothness: I felt every bump in the road, I realize this is not a top of the line Sedan, but it is a Sedan. I still feel the road in my Yaris, but not like the Versa.

2009 Toyota Yaris

4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 5-speed manual FWD

2009 Honda Fit

4dr Hatch 117-horsepower 1.5L I4 5-speed automatic FWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Fuel economy: Over 22,000 miles I've obtained 42.7 mpg (combined), My car has a manual tranny, I maintain proper tire pressures & the gear lube & engine oil are 100% synthetic lubricants

Interior styling: I like the instrument cluster CENTERED IN THE DASH instead of behind the steering wheel. This is where the instrument cluster should have ALWAYS BEEN LOCATED

Driving position & visibility: I can reach all dash controls with just arm movement. I call see all 3 mirrors with just eye movement. I can reach clutch, brake, & accelerator pedals without stretching.

Front seat comfort: I can adjust the seat back so I can reach all controls with just arm movement. I can raise the seat so my thighs are fully supported right out to my knees.

Reliability & durability: After 22,000 miles I've not had any problems. A/C puts out 38 degrees when atmospheric temp is 110; heater puts out a blistering 185 degrees when outside temp is only 45 degrees.

Why Not the Honda Fit?

Fuel economy: I rented the car for a weekend & my gas mileage from Phoenix, to Flagstaff & back to Phoenix was only 28.8 mpg This car had an automatic tranny. Engine rmp always sounded BUSY & noisey

Interior styling: Inadequate overhead light, instrument cluster obscured by steering wheel, & MPG readout was overly optimistic (62 MPG - no way) real gas mileage was a miserable 28.8 mpg

Driving position & visibility: When making left hand turns, the road visibility was partially obscured by a post, unless I moved my head & shoulders

Front seat comfort: I couldn't seem to get the seat positioned to where it was both comfortable & where I was able to reach all dash controls at the same time

Ride smoothness: There was too much road noise that got through to me as a passenger. The ride was about the same as the YARIS, but the ROAD NOISE LEVEL, was too much & too loud at highway speeds.

2008 Toyota Yaris

2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

2008 smart fortwo

2dr Coupe 70-horsepower 1.0L I3 5-speed automated manual RWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Fuel economy: Averaging 40mpg w/ MIX of city/stop & go/hwy.

Price or payments: Bought my 5-speed LOADED (side airbags, curtain airbags, ABS, Power Package, etc) ...$13,800

Front seat comfort: Have driven Tampa - Durham multiple times (11-12 hrs each way). Seat feels REAL nice to me.

Exterior styling: C'mon! Looks cool :)

Handling: Snappy little car. Great fun to drive.

Why Not the smart fortwo?

Powertrain performance: Not available with TRUE manual transmission. The 'manual' mode was not very responsive.

Materials & workmanship: Some of the inside seemed cheap ...even compared to the Yaris. ALSO I refuse to buy a car if I cannot rest my thumb on the horn button ...SERIOUSLY. I can do this with the Yaris, and so I see the Yaris as a safer car.

Insurance & depreciation: Insurance is difficult to get for the ForTwo

Handling: Not very responsive.

2006 Toyota Matrix

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Dealership practices: Honest. Went the extra mile to find exactly the car I wanted. Exactly.

Fuel economy: 38.8 average

Reliability & durability: takes what I dish out....with aplomb.

Front seat comfort: long distance comfort

Materials & workmanship: close tolerance seams - paint and interior appointments.

Toyota Yaris Not Preferred

2011 Ford Fiesta

4dr Hatch 120-horsepower 1.6L I4 6-speed automatic FWD

2011 Toyota Yaris

2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

Why the Ford Fiesta?

Quietness: quieter than the Yaris at cruising speed and light acceleration

Available features: available 6 speed automatic versus 4 speed automatic in yaris. Integrated bluetooth with Sync

Audio & nav systems: 6 speaker system sounds better than the toyota unit. Sirius satellite radio 6 months subscription prepaid in the Ford.

Safety & braking: 7 standard airbags, best in class.

Discounts & incentives: additional free winter tires on steel rims and tire pressure sensors where I am, installed free of charge.

Why Not the Toyota Yaris?

Materials & workmanship: Passenger Door seal leaked water from melting snow - outside temperatures below freezing and may have affected seal. Should not happen

Control design: having main gauges in the centre of the vehicle distracts from driving and distance vision

Powertrain performance: 4 speed automatic and engine is sluggish and lacks pep.

Handling: more vague than the Fiesta and does not give as much road feedback.

2009 Honda Fit

4dr Hatch 117-horsepower 1.5L I4 5-speed manual FWD

2009 Toyota Yaris

4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 5-speed manual FWD

Why the Honda Fit?

Fuel economy: Comprehensive fuel economy gauge that is easy to read! It's easy to adapt driving to save $$$

Powertrain performance: A little more powerful than the Yaris

Interior styling: Robust and clean

Handling: Fun to drive and, in my opinion, takes curves much better than the Yaris

Safety & braking: Front and lateral airbags + 4-wheels ABS on all models

Why Not the Toyota Yaris?

Driving position & visibility: Not enough place for my head

Audio & nav systems: Listen to the stock audio system, you'll understand! Barely usable!

Dealership practices: Maybe juste this Toyota dealership but they put much pressure to sell you stuff you don't want and seem to avoid selling you stuff you want!

Handling: Just not as good as the fit

Safety & braking: Have to pay more for extra safety

2009 Hyundai Elantra

4dr Sedan 138-horsepower 2.0L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

2009 Toyota Yaris

4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

Why the Hyundai Elantra?

Driving position & visibility: Good position. HUD is directly in front of the driver and not in the center of the dashboard.

Discounts & incentives: Great manufacturer rebates.

Front seat comfort: Comfortable ride position, good height and visibility.

Why Not the Toyota Yaris?

Driving position & visibility: Ride position too low, visibility is not great. Dashboard HUD position is in the center of the dash and not directly in front of the driver.

Price or payments: Less car for more money.

Front seat comfort: Ride position too low.

2009 Hyundai Accent

2dr Hatch 110-horsepower 1.6L I4 5-speed manual FWD

2009 Toyota Yaris

4dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

Why the Honda Fit?

Exterior styling: The 2009 Honda Fit is significantly longer than previous models and offers a greater feeling of spaciousness while at the same time offering good visibility

Toyota Yaris Pros and Cons

2009 Toyota Yaris

4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 5-speed manual FWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Brand reputation & image: Toyota is known to be reliable and maint-free. Yaris is another model that I like, from driven my friend here in the US and overseas. Seems like easy to work with should have have to do it myself too.

Fuel economy: 40 MPG, what's not to like?

Safety & braking: 2009 model comes with ABS and standard side-airbags, just in case.

Color choices: I like my Bayou Blue color.

Exterior styling: Euro/Asian style. Away from boring designs here in the US.

2009 Toyota Yaris

4dr Sedan 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Color choices: The colour choices were basic but not overdone. The turquoise was just green enough without killing the effect.

Fuel economy: Very economical gas consumption.

Handling: Easy to handle with comfort.

Rear seat room & comfort: Very roomy for a 'small car'. Seating in comfortable.

Discounts & incentives: Got it on sale in my country for about US $3000.00 less. Included power options and RAV4 cd player. Paid US $80.00 to get iPod interface and installation.

Control design: By having the gauges in the centre of the dash it forces me to shift eyes more, therefore helping to keep me awake after long hours on the road. It also helps to break the monotony during driving.

2009 Toyota Yaris

2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 5-speed manual FWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Reliability & durability: I have not had a single problem with the car in the first seven months of ownership. Put gas in, change the oil and it just goes.

Fuel economy: I've been averaging 42 MPG for the last 4 tanks, and my driving is a 60/40 mix of Highway/City. And the engine isn't even broken in yet.

Price or payments: I feel that I got a great price on the car thanks to factory incentives and a great dealership. Payment's are a nice low $200 a month.

Discounts & incentives: The incentive at the time was great ($1000) and was a big reason why I purchased this car over a Honda Fit.

Exterior styling: With the 'S' trim and 2 doors I find it very cool functional.

2009 Toyota Yaris

2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 5-speed manual FWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?

Fuel economy: First tank of fuel resulted in 35.44 mpg. Previous car was around 25 mpg.

Brand reputation & image: It's a Toyota. Known for longevity.

Ride smoothness: Comfortable ride. Looks small, but interior is roomy.

2009 Toyota Yaris

2dr Hatch 106-horsepower 1.5L I4 4-speed automatic FWD

Why the Toyota Yaris?
